Antagonism of nitric oxide toward the inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase by carbon monoxide and cyanide. Chem Res Toxicol. Materials in this group are generally noncombustible, except hydrogen cyanide HCN , which is flammable and dangerous because of its wide flammability limits. Cyanides are often flammable by chemical reaction with moisture or acid; they react readily to evolve flammable HCN.
Heating inorganic cyanides to decomposition liberates toxic gases and flammable gases that include HCN if traces of moisture are present. Materials in this group react slowly with water to evolve gaseous hydrogen cyanide HCN. Acids cause the rapid evolution of HCN, which may polymerize; carbon dioxide from the air is sufficiently acidic to liberate HCN from solutions of cyanides. Inorganic cyanides are incompatible with isocyanates, nitrides, and peroxides.
Edit: It really does not matter how you classify it. HCN is a chemical, and behaves as it does. In the end, it's classification does not affect it's reactions nor it's other properties. Some things never fit nicely into discrete compartments.
Classifying things is good for organization I suppose but its not really going to help you understand it. But they do make you do it in Chem classes. Its silly but we would get a list of compounds and be told to classify them as organic or inorganic. Also classifying allows for walls to be formed and those walls become hard to break.

Shouldn't sodium cyanide be an organic compound because it has a carbon atom bonded to nitrogen? How do we differentiate between an organic compound and an inorganic compound? Improve this question.
