The host was the topic of discussion in several instances on the CBS sitcom that ran from to Barney's childhood had a major influence on how he turned out as an adult.

Barney's mother was never truly honest with him as a kid. She refused to explain why his half-brother, James Wayne Brady , was black and tended to change the subject when asked about the identity of their fathers. The mystery surrounding Barney's dad carried on into his adulthood but the truth later came out. Before Barney unearthed the truth, Loretta led his son to believe that Bob Barker was his father.

In reality, she lied so her son would stop asking for his identity. I want to fix this and I don't know how! Please, tell me what I can do! I'll do anything! Jerry Whitaker : You'll never get it down like that. Jerry Whitaker : No, Barney, Barney! Put the pointy end into the grooves. That's it, now turn it.

Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. Jerry Whitaker : I have no good excuse, Barney. It took me years before I was even able to look myself in the mirror for the way I let you down. It took courage to send me that letter. More courage than I've ever had. I owe you a lifetime of apologies, and I, I just I have no idea where to begin. Sign In. How I Met Your Mother. Director Pamela Fryman. Though Barney has few memorable moments in the episode, Lithgow's Jerry is well-written and terrifically acted. The most enjoyable moments, however, were found in the running joke.

The characters begin pointing out each others' knowledge gaps: the moments where generally smart people exhibit an ignorance so grand, it becomes funny. Barney doesn't know how to use a screwdriver; Ted pronounces chameleon "shah-meh-leon"; Robin thinks that the North Pole is fictional like Narnia and Hogwarts ; and Lily has terrible aim. When they refuse to poke fun at Marshall, he acknowledges that their cautious post-trauma treatment of him has not gone unnoticed and that he'd even begun to test his friends by doing "crazy stuff" like declaring that The Phantom Menace is the best Star Wars movie Barney: "It ages well" , and bringing home a possum as a house pet "he's violent and he hates us".

Finally they give in and admit that Marshall can't wink, he can't swallow pills, he adds too much water to oatmeal, and he consistently misses one belt loop. The moment where the mourner is restored to the normal of the everyday is an important one, even if it is simply being the one people are joking about, and HIMYM treats it with a perfect blend of goofiness and sincerity.

Jerome then finally made an appearance, showing up at Barney's front door and revealed he got Barney's letter. The two then spend the night at MacLaren's. In the following day, Barney stated that his meeting with his father was awesome, that they both ordered the same drink, that he is funny, he manages tours, and that he is a huge time player.

The gang warns Barney not to get his hopes up as Jerome might have only told Barney what he wanted to hear. Although later, Jerome comes and asks the gang about Barney since he won't answer his calls.

It is then revealed that Jerome is only a driving instructor and has a family. The gang then holds an intervention for Barney, with Marshall convincing Barney to go meet his father since he still has one, while Marshall's dad passed away not long ago. Barney then has dinner with Jerome's family. At the dinner, Barney constantly mocks Jerome's son, J. Jerome then reveals to Barney that J.

After hearing this, Barney gets out of the house and tries to take down J. Jerome asks Barney what is wrong, with Barney replying in anger that Jerome is just a "lame suburban dad".

Jerome then asks why does that make him so mad, and Barney replies that if he was going to be some lame suburban dad why couldn't he have been that for him. Jerome then apologizes and tells Barney he would do anything to make it up to him.

Barney then ignores him and continues to try to take down the hoop. Jerome then helps Barney by giving him a screwdriver and telling him how to unscrew the hoop. Jerome tells his son that when he got the letter, it made him feel guilt about how he just left Barney and wishes to be in his life if he will have him. Barney simply takes the hoop and leaves, in a manner like Jerome left him.

Jerome later made an appearance again, where he calls Barney to ask him to join him and his other son on a fishing trip.
