However, as in all mysteries that science and religion attempt to solve, with this question of consciousness and the brain, we encounter a paradox. The brain is indeed located in in space,--the three pound universe inside our skull--and yet the mind, soul and spirit that are connected with the brain do not themselves occupy space.

The brain is a transmitter, if you like, that does not itself originate the complete source of its transmissions. Love is the one means that ensureth true felicity. Not all marriages endure forever. Scientists also believe that lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex is the loud inner voice that pricks whenever we are inclined towards evil or blunder in our lives.

Oxford scientists say this is the region that tells us when we go wrong and whether we have been well advised to do something better. MRI imaging of 25 adult volunteers was used to identify key components in the cortex area of the human brain, and how these components were connected up with other brain areas. The results were then compared to equivalent MRI data from 25 macaque monkeys. To figure this out, the team analysed 36 patients in hospital with brainstem lesions - 12 of them were in a coma unconscious and 24 were defined as being conscious.

The researchers then mapped their brainstems to figure out if there was one particular region that could explain why some patients had maintained consciousness despite their injuries, while others had become comatose.

What they found was one small area of the brainstem - known as the rostral dorsolateral pontine tegmentum - that was significantly associated with coma. Ten out of the 12 unconscious patients had damage in this area, while just one out of the 24 conscious patients did. That suggests that this tiny region of the brainstem is important for consciousness, but it's not the full story. To figure out which other parts of the brain were fully connected to this region, the team looked at a brain map - or connectome - of a healthy human brain, which shows all the different connections that we know of so far in our brains you can see a connectome in the image at the top of this story.

Once we start talking about the brain and consciousness, we must necessarily begin talking about the unconscious as well, because the brain has many specialized circuits that are constantly decoding various aspects of our environment without our being conscious of their doing so.

Likewise, the vast majority of our behaviours occur automatically , without our being conscious of having initiated them. The same goes for our mother tongue, whose grammar we use correctly without even realizing it.

One last example: some people suffering from brain damage can perform certain tasks correctly without being conscious of doing so. Even so, the stream of consciousness remains a constant presence in our daily lives. And as we are about to see, our conscious states involve extensive areas of our brains. For example, which parts of the brain must become active first, and which ones subsequently, in order for you to have a conscious visual perception? Whether the subject perceives the word consciously depends on how long it is projected. If it is projected for only about a quarter of a second, it will not be perceived consciously, but if it is projected for longer—say about three-quarters of a second— it will.

What do scientists see happening in the brain when the word is projected for the shorter interval and for the longer one? Whether or not the word is ultimately perceived consciously, what happens during the first milliseconds ms is exactly the same: only the visual cortex is activated.
