When was trash written
It was truly eye opening. From the living conditions to the prison and graveyard. Well written and warms the heart even with the poverty and darkness.
Nov 16, Linda Lipko rated it really liked it Shelves: young-adult. This book took my breath away for the sheer beauty of the writing and the depth in which the author told a tale of poverty and the stark disparity of those who have and those who are without even basic needs.
It is a story of political graft and corruption that occurs systemically on all levels of the hierarchy. It is a story of brave young boys who pay a high price for a dream of a better existence. With no hope of a better life, a large population of poor pick and sort garbage. Living and workin This book took my breath away for the sheer beauty of the writing and the depth in which the author told a tale of poverty and the stark disparity of those who have and those who are without even basic needs.
Living and working in squalor among the mounds of filth, stink and desecration both young and old eek out a brutal existence. When Raphael and Gardo discover a bag, a wallet and a key, they jump through the garbage piles for joy. Their elation is soon crushed as police officers enter the dump and grill the inhabitants. Soon they focus on Raphael and Gardo and as they becoming increasingly brutal, the boys seek assistance from "Rat" to hide the cash and belongings.
Aptly named, Rat lives in the dark tunnels of garbage with rats who over populate each crevice. As the political machine becomes more menacing, the three know their lives are in grave danger. While throughout the book the author does not state the location, in opening comments, he does site that he was inspired to write the book after visiting the Philippines and observing the young and old living in garbage dumps, picking the refuge.

I enjoyed how this book had many Turing and unsuspecting twists. This book got me sucked in and didn't want to even put it down. I also enjoyed the Characters in this book and how outgoing they are.
However I did dislike some things in this book such as how quickly the ending went by, I wish the author explained more toward the end of the book with more details. I also dis Three boys Gardo,Raphael, and Rat find something in the trash and now have to solve the mystery and where it will lead them. I also dislike how there was not more chapters told by Rat because I enjoyed how he would tell the story. Overall I enjoyed the book Trash although i would not typically go for a mystery book, I did enjoy this one and I will definitely look for some more mystery books in the future and give it a shot.
I enjoyed reading and leaning about these boys life and how much they went through. I believe that anyone who is interested in the genres of mystery, drama, and economic book because it has all three in this book. I can see how this YA novel can be taught at different conceptual levels and it would be a great springboard into important discussions about third world communities.
Not really the message we want to give to adolescents. This book reminded me a bit of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. This is about a group of poor dumpsite boys in the Philippines who find a mysterious bag in the trash. Others want it, and will stop at nothing to get it. On the run, the boys must solve the mystery of the enclosed key and the letter before they are caught by their pursuers and face terrifying consequences.
Lots of twists, turns and action with a great ending. Shall give it as a gift to my enemies. View all 12 comments. Nov 28, Martin Huang C1 added it. I thought that Trash is a book where the level of fascination builds up as the book goes on.
At first, when the characters are being constructed, it seems a little bit dull. But as you move on, the story becomes really cool with deep secrets keep getting revealed. The way the story is told is also very interesting; the book's almost like a collection of journals, with multiple characters' perspectives and aspects of the story.
So overall this book was really cool, and I enjoyed it very much. Reading experience is more of a 3. The book though, is a 3. But the cover the review features also really connects with me now. After reading this book, it will hold so much meaning. This is why I love covers that are actually relevant to the Reading experience is more of a 3. There is no going around it. What these people face is horrible. And although we know this goes on. Reading it and getting up close and personal is tough to stomach. I felt for them all and grew to really care for these three boys.
Raphael, a boy who literally lives on trash, comes across a bag containing a wallet, key, map and money one day as he's sorting through the trash. He knows at once that he's found something special. His best mate, Garbo- the more mature and wiser of the two isn't so sure. When the police make a visit shortly after - asking for a bag, for some reason Raphael can't bring himself to turn it in. Thankfully, Garbo stays by his side - even when things take a horrible turn. Because it's not before long until the police become more insistent, the clues more dangerous and the stakes higher.
But they now realise that once they've chosen this path, there's no going back. I do think the book dwindled towards the end.
It felt all very anti-climatic really. And although I felt for these boys, I also don't feel like I connected with them as much as I could have. To be fair, there is always a new character telling their side of the story after every few chapters, so just when you feel like you're really getting to know the boys, you're switched to someone else. And maybe because you really don't get to see their inner turmoil or they don't let you in enough , or because it's not all that gritty or dark and depressing not as depressing as I thought it would be you don't feel the sleepless-nights-kind-of-sad.
It is sad because of the life they live. But a lot of their journey is focused on this mystery. I think.. Because as you're getting a picture of how these boys live, you will shuffle around and want to look away. Because how can you not feel guilty. Having all that we have when others live in these horrible conditions. It really is just tragic. But later on it becomes a lot more about 'the answers' they're trying to find, rather than the place they call home. And it does make me feel like a lot of potential got lost in the ' mystery' turn it took.
I know that beneath these turn of events lies a message, but I actually didn't care all that much for the answers they were trying to find. I would have much rather read a book about 'just three' boys and what they deal with when living in such conditions on a day to day basis.
May it have been them trying to perhaps move forward, find hope and new meaning to life. I definitely felt like their families kind of became a blur eventually, which is a shame because I did start off thinking they would be more consistent and vital to the book. Especially when you are shown a boy like 'Rat' who is an example of what can happen when you don't have parents to support you and give you love.
It was a fairly quick read. But it shook a little towards the middle and gave us this very rushed end. A little too simple and perfect, if you ask me. The writing was more on the 'simple' side. I'm still not sure how I feel about that. Now that I think about this more and more. I think the thing that stopped me from giving this the four stars is the lack of emotional investment I felt towards the book and characters.
Apart from feeling a little at the beginning, I think too much focus went elsewhere and that the story and the depth of the characters that I was looking forward to got lost somewhere in between.
Favourite part? Definitely, definitely 'All Souls Day'. It's a day that all go to the cemetery to visit their long lost loved ones and pay respect. It is like one long conversation in the dark and I found this moment in the book quite beautiful.
You prop up a chair, pour in a glass of wine, one for yourself and one for the deceased, and talk. Just that. The cemetery is lit with candles upon candles, and honestly, it is something which I can just imagine myself being so drawn to.
The togetherness of all the people who are all there for the same reason. This undeniable intimacy between you and the one you have come to visit. I wish such a thing was celebrated here. How lovely. Oct 19, Elephants rated it it was ok. Anyway three boys live on a horrible stinky damp dump site where they can never escape. But one day Raphael and his best friend Gardo find a mystery that they are desperate to solve but the police track them down and soon with their new friend Rat they must escape the dump site.
This story about three dumpsite boys in a third world country is absolutely stunning. How their lives have changed with the blink of an eye. The book never bored me.
It was an adventurous, terrifying and a heartfelt story. It focuses on the value of friendship, family and the true meaning of happiness.
Money can buy some happiness, but if not shared with those you love, you might as well have none. This book also illustrates how some people in certain circumstances may be at a disadvantage, but t This story about three dumpsite boys in a third world country is absolutely stunning.
The ending was so beautiful. LOVED this book Aug 01, Ejmi rated it really liked it. There are values and virtues and morals; there are relationships and trust and love - and all of that is important. Money, however, is more important, and it is dripping all the time, like precious water.
Some drink deep, others thirst. Without money, you shrivel and die. The absence of money is drought in which nothing can grow. Nobody knows the value of water until they've lived in a dry, dry place. Feb 13, Hayley rated it it was amazing.
This is probably one of my favorite books of all time! I recommend it to everyone and anyone. Found out today that they have made a movie based on Trash. Looks really good!
Though it is almost impossible for it to be better than the book! Apr 08, Mayla rated it it was ok. While this book started off good it went downhill. I overall did not like this book very though it was cool how it showed the perspective of people who live in junkyards. I honestly would not have finished it if I hadn't had to for book club.
A story of hardship, courage, guile and danger. Kept me reading. May 01, Laci Champney rated it liked it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Raphael, Gardo, and Rat wants to solve a mystery of a wallet they found, but they can be killed, so they have to do it very carefully.
My favorite part throughout the book Trash is how the three boys helped each other they just always knew what to do. I loved how the story was set up because in the beginning I was not expecting the book to be like that. The worst part of the book was when they threw 5 million dollars into the trash slums. I don't like that part because they worked so hard for it Raphael, Gardo, and Rat wants to solve a mystery of a wallet they found, but they can be killed, so they have to do it very carefully.
I don't like that part because they worked so hard for it and they were facing death but they still threw all their hard work away. All though I did not like some parts of the book it was a very good book. The author did a very good job of cliff hangers and just making the story work. I think someone who likes mystery and suspense would love this book. Readers also enjoyed. Young Adult. Realistic Fiction. About Andy Mulligan.
He had been his friend ever since they were born. He usually comes over to dinner at Raphael's house. He is very tall and skinny for a fourteen year old. How many pages are in trash?
Why is Gabriel Olondriz in jail? The reason Gabriel is in the jail is because of senator, it was all senator's fault. Gabriel knew that the senator siphoned the money from the poor people and Gabriel had the evidence of that entire problem but the senator did something and the Gabriel was the person who had to go to the jail, because he had no power. Who wrote trash? Andy Mulligan. Where is behala dumpsite? Behala is a part of Kolkata Municipal Corporation area. Where is the story trash set?
What is a trash movie? Trash is a crime drama thriller film directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Richard Curtis, based on Andy Mulligan's novel of same name. How old is Raphael in the book Trash? How long did it take Andy Mulligan to write trash?
It was bending the trees, and blowing the trash up, out of the skips — a frightening, furious wind. Trash popped out like an egg, and we changed one word only: an obscenity that suddenly seemed crude in the mouths of those driven kids.
I watch it through a mist of tears, knowing that Mr Daldry tapped into the spirit of the book, which is the spirit of those children.
